电池系统“produced by GROB”

GROB ELECTRIC MOBILITY
A new business area for the automotive industry
With the acquisition of the Italian firm DMG meccanica, a leading manufacturer for electric motors, GROB is expanding its electric mobility knowhow. With an enhanced portfolio in the new field of electric mobility, GROB is also a competent service provider and resource for the car-manufacturing industry, and well-positioned for the future.
It is certain that the electric car – with its battery-powered drive and resulting radically different powertrain – will at some point become a mass phenomenon. We will then see a reduction not only in combustion of engines with components such as injection pumps, pistons, camshafts and turbochargers, but also in the classic transmission with its multiplicity of gears, the whole exhaust system and the oil circulation system. For this reason, three years ago GROB began to study the components of the future powertrain. It quickly became apparent that the electric motor in its various forms (synchronous motor, externally excited asynchronous motor and hybrid motor) represents an important element for the future development of machines in mass production. For GROB the philosophy applies that the manufacture of machines for the electric motor is just as important as the manufacture of machines for components of the combustion engine. After analyzing several electric motor technologies, GROB created trend and market analysis and realized that there are existing and brand-new technologies which are in the very early stages of development. It also quickly became clear that for the existing technologies there is a high demand for production systems for mass production in the automotive industry – for example TESLA, Volkswagen and BMW.
GROB and the automotive industry go back a long way
Against the background of automotive transformation and the increasing importance of electric mobility, the number of inquiries fielded by GROB for projects involving electric drives has increased massively. Almost every car manufacturer now has hybrid or purely electrically-powered vehicles in its range, and consequently GROB is currently developing several projects for electric drives in the international automotive industry. All these projects can be carried out at GROB, as it already has many specialists and development engineers working in this field. Working closely with well-known car manufacturers, they have begun advanced development of the vital „electric motor“ and „battery module“ components and analyzed a multitude of technology processes for the manufacture and design of the stators and brought them to further development. GROB is now clearly in a position to take on further large projects as general contractor for the complete powertrain for hybrid or purely electric drives and to provide machines and equipment for electric motors, battery modules and battery packs as well as fuel cells, and to ensureseries production in the future.
Strategically planned entry into e-mobility
Since GROB is one of the few machine tool manufacturers with high competence not only in the field of machining but also in assembly technology, GROB has evaluated its abilities in the field of electrical motors and established that the company can achieve reasonable value creation in the winding technology segment. Established producers of machines for feed technology, mostly based in Japan, Germany and northern Italy, have been studied and analyzed. It soon became apparent that GROB would have either to develop the winding technology itself or buy in the appropriate technologies on the market. After some time it was clear that the company DMG meccanica in Torino was among the top candidates for winding and feed technology. And after initial talks with the management of DMG meccanica it emerged that the technology, experience, quality and above all the human elements of the owners Mauro Marzolla and Marco Debilio were a good fit with the values of GROB. As discussions progressed it was quickly agreed that intensive cooperation culminating in a takeover of DMG meccanica would take place.
A well-known partner in machine and plant engineering for electric motors
Mauro Marzolla and the father of Marco Debilio founded DMG meccanica in 1992 from a spin-off of PAVESI, which at the time was one of the leading Italian providers of winding machines for electric motors. Marzolla and Debilio both brought with them decades of experience in winding technology for electric motors. In the early years, DMG meccanica and PAVESI worked together closely until PAVESI was taken over by DMG meccanica in 2001. Subsequently DMG meccanica enjoyed an extremely successful period during which a range of new technologies and inventions were brought to market. These included both solutions and machines for manufacturing stators for electric motors, alternators and generators, and solutions for highly efficient winding machines. Directly responsible for these technological milestones were the engineers of DMG meccanica, who are among the best in their industry. Following this development, further products were developed over the years, such as various machines for spool manufacturing, spool feeding and winding head forming and slot insulation machines. In 2016, DMG meccanica, with a workforce of forty employees, achieved a turnover of ten million Euro. Five percent was in the home market of Italy, 40 percent in the EU and 55 percent in non-EU countries. 60 percent of the customer portfolio is comprised of well-known electric motor manufacturers and suppliers to the automotive industry. In addition, DMG meccanica is particularly well-represented in the important e-mobility market of China.
Specialized provider of turnkey equipment
GROB’s innovative prowess in the automotive industry has led to the electric motor and battery being pushed forward into a new technological dimension, and to the development of electric motors achieving high power density and efficiency. The challenge is now to manufacture very precise, process-stable and precisely-timed machines and equipment, since very narrow tolerances are vital for achieving efficiency. As a general contractor, GROB offers a wide portfolio of such machines in the field of stator, rotor and electric motor production. The production program ranges from individual semi-automatic machines to fully automated complete solutions. The GROB machine portfolio encompasses a broad spectrum in the field of „winding“ and „assembly“ of electric motors, from the assembly of individual components to the final electrical testing of the finished product.
Battery systems „produced by GROB“
In addition to electric motors, the field of battery systems represents the second most important of the pillars for the future of electric mobility. The production of battery cells and the reliable assembly of battery systems is becoming increasingly important. As a specialist in assembly technology and automation, GROB is ideally positioned as a provider of turnkey equipment to also be capable of providing future-proof and reliable systems engineering in the field of battery systems. To meet the demands of car manufacturers in the field of battery systems, very versatile engineering is required, for which GROB develops new and innovative system concepts focusing on process stability, precision and flexibility, taking cost factors into consideration. With a team of specialists, the GROB technicians work on futureproof production processes and make an important contribution to the development of intelligent concepts from ideas to series production. In module assembly, individual battery cells are processed to form a module. The requirements for battery systems as energy storage systems are tremendously high in terms of product, production technology and safety, and optimal quality is demanded in view of the delicate cell chemistry, so production ines must be fully automated and interlinked. But at the end of the day, the success of production is largely dependent upon understanding and optimization of the overall process. For this reason, GROB offers support to its customers at all stages of the value-added chain. The technical know-how needed for this is partly drawn from similar processes in assembly technology.
Focusing on fuel cell technology
Fuel cell technology represents a further promising technology within electric mobility. Scalable production and assembly lines are required for the assembly of components of the vehicle fuel cell drive. Based on its varied product portfolio, GROB develops suitable solutions with high quality equipment for customers at various stages of development of electrifying their vehicles.
Meeting the challenges of the future
Although the changes in vehicle drive technology have already begun, their forms, numbers and markets cannot be accurately predicted as yet. However, immediately following the merger of GROB and DMG meccanica, intensive talks were started for projects, technologies and further developments and the first joint bids have already been worked out. Since the production of electric motors demands special assembly know-how, it was logical for GROB to seek a competent partner from the field of electric motor technology. Its takeover of DMG meccanica enables GROB to emphasize more than ever its claim in drive technology to be a leading and reliable partner for the automotive industry.
