October 8, 2008 -- Wonderware announced the North American winners of its annual Wonderware Open 2008 competition, which recognizes innovative industrial and manufacturing applications worldwide.

“The Wonderware Open is now in its 14th year and we’ve been able to give recognition to a wide range of innovative applications across virtually every vertical industry,” said Mark Davidson, vice president of global marketing for Wonderware. “With each year, Wonderware continues to be delighted with the business performance improvements, speed, and cost savings that are being generated by our customers and partner ecosystem by fully leveraging Wonderware software solutions capabilities. The standards have been raised once more and the winners should be proud of their achievements in innovation to drive operational excellence for their businesses.”

The winners were selected from entries with solutions in four designated categories which included “Best SCADA Application,” “Best HMI Application,” “Best Enterprise Manufacturing Intelligence Application” and “Best Manufacturing Execution System Application.” Entries were judged by industry experts, trade magazine editors and Wonderware. The winners of this year’s Wonderware Open were selected based on the solution’s impact on product quality, productivity, responsiveness and faster time to market.

The 2008 Wonderware Open winners include Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) for “Best SCADA Application,” based on its use of Wonderware software to provide a comprehensive range of reliable, cost-effective and environmentally responsible water and wastewater services to clients, including municipalities, private sector companies and First Nations, the native communities in Canada, in the province of Ontario, Canada. Wonderware has provided OCWA with the ability to create standardized applications that can be deployed at a central hub or across multiple sites in weeks instead of months.

Portland General Electric (PGE) was selected as the winner of the “Best HMI Application” category for its use of Wonderware HMI software to manage its demand-response program which provides electrical grid capacity by linking customer-owned generators as part of a “virtual power plant” for its Dispatchable Standby Generation (DSG) program. With this system, PGE can simultaneously reduce peak loads on the grid by using the available aggregated electricity generated from customers’ emergency stand-by generators as part of their reserve capacity system – all from graphical HMI screens.

The “Best Enterprise Manufacturing Intelligence Application” winner is New Belgium Brewing Company of Colorado for its innovative use of Wonderware applications to manage its long-standing programs to reduce, reuse and recycle. In 1998 New Belgium Brewing became the first wind-powered brewery in the United States. Sustainability and utilizing innovative technologies are among the company’s core values. The breweries’ new manufacturing intelligence system utilizes Wonderware software to provide extensive “track and trace” capabilities and adhere to New Belgium’s conservation and performance goals. This solution enables the brewery to track any bottle or tank of beer back to all of its ingredients and processes within 30 minutes.

Cytec Engineered Materials (CEM) of New Jersey was selected as the winner of the “Best Manufacturing Execution System Application” category. As a materials manufacturer that specializes in high-performance composite materials and adhesives for commercial and military aerospace, automotive and marine applications, Cytec chose to implement an initial pilot manufacturing process based on Wonderware MES software. The pilot implementation demonstrated Wonderware’s capabilities to address a number of CEM’s key business requirements, including the ability to integrate their business systems to provide real-time information to customers, and reduce scrap and rework to increase production efficiencies.

The winners of each category will compete for the Wonderware Open 2008 “Pinnacle Award” during the WonderWorld user conference this week in Las Vegas. A separate Wonderware Open 2008 based in Europe is currently ongoing for applications based in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The winners will be honored at WonderWorld in Copenhagen, Denmark in November 2008.
