August 22, 2008 -- Microsemi announced that the HiPath Wireless 802.11n and Outdoor Access Points from Siemens Communications are the first on the market to be certified at Microsemi Corporation's PowerDsine testing facility for applications requiring high power, yet at the low power ratings specified in existing standards for Power over Ethernet (PoE).

Microsemi, whose PowerDsine technology pioneered Power over Ethernet, conducts comprehensive testing of PoE end devices to assure successful installation of PowerDsine Midspan systems using certified devices. Siemens' 802.11n APs and Outdoor Access Points are the first to qualify for PowerDsine Certification at the low power specified in IEEE 802.3af PoE standards for such deployments.

Siemens created HiPath Wireless 802.11n APs to plug into existing PoE-enabled Ethernet ports. This allows enterprises to enjoy full dual-band 3x3 MIMO and 802.11n high performance while offering the opportunity to save on deployment costs, thereby helping to increase their return on investment from network infrastructures built for the 802.3af PoE standard.

"To qualify for PowerDsine certification, we put PoE end devices through long and exhaustive testing," said Steve Litchfield, Microsemi Executive Vice President and President of Analog Mixed Signal Group. "It is a noteworthy achievement for Siemens to handle 802.11n requirements within the maximum 12.95 watts allowed by IEEE 802.3af."

Higher power AP solutions can require installing AC power outlets or costly, time-consuming upgrading of network infrastructures. In addition, the new high power 802.3at standard awaits IEEE ratification.

Siemens' 802.11n APs typically consume only 11 watts of power, well below the 802.3af limits, making them not only less expensive to deploy, but also more environmentally friendly to operate.

"PowerDsine's certification of the HiPath Wireless 802.11n APs and Outdoor APs is further validation that Siemens' advanced power engineering capabilities have delivered a truly unique solution that saves deployment costs and offers more 'green' benefits from on-going power savings," said Luc Roy, Vice President of Enterprise Mobility for Siemens Communications, Inc. "This solution enables businesses to start right now to take advantage of the superior speed and range offered by advanced 802.11n solutions, without the added cost and installation complexity that may have been holding them back."
