The non-contact height sensor types that are used in the road pavement measurement today are either laser, ultrasonic, optical or infrared. Ultrasonic sensors were the most common type of sensors used in the 1980s. Currently laser sensors are the most commonly used height sensors used in profilers. However, because of the economic cost with this type of sensors, their use has increased over the past several years in China.
The ultrasonic sensors record the height to the pavement surface from the vehicle. The accelerometers that are located on top of the ultrasonic sensors record the vertical acceleration of the vehicle. Data from the accelerometers are used to determine the height of the vehicle relative to an inertial reference frame. The distance measuring system keeps track of the distance with respect to a reference starting point. Using the data recorded by the distance measuring system, height sensor and the accelerometer, a computer programme computes the profile of the pavement surface.
